I would like to submit a formal complaint that the board is meeting and eating at Bar Epernay – “Birmingham’s premier Champagne and Piano Bar”. Considering the board has voted for massive 11.5% real terms cuts in wages to Guild staff some of whom are already below a living wage as well as handing out extremely ungenerous pensions cuts. Considering that many students who, ultimately foot the bill of the board eating and drinking at Bar Epernay, are not able to afford to eat there, I think this behavior is inappropriate and insensitive.
I think it should be noted that there are many students who would happily run in elections and be members of this board. The students would do so readily with no perks and would be more than happy with meetings taking place in the guild. I think the guild offering free travel and a two course meal at this “premier Champagne bar” in the mailbox for 13 people is highly inappropriate.
If possible the meal at Bar Epernay should be canceled and we should reconvene the meeting to a room in the Guild of students.
